Ernest Fitzroy was born in 1917 in Galway to banker Charles Eric Blake Knox. Charles’ wife, Audrey Prudence, was the daughter of Major Harry D’Esterre Darby Dowman of the Royal Engineers who had fought in WWI.
The couple chose to give their baby the middle name ‘Fitzroy’ in admiration of a relative – Vice Admiral Robert Fitzroy – best known as the Captain of the HMS Beagle on which the naturalist Charles Darwin sailed to gather material for his theory of evolution. Robert Fitzroy is also credited with founding the Meteorological Service or the Met Office as we know it.
